At the end of 2024, the Beijing International Exchange Association formally submitted the proposal titled "Advancing Emerging Technology Capacity Building to Empower High-Quality and Sustainable Development in BRICS+ Countries" to the global initiative mechanism of the UNESCO “International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development (2024–2034).” Recently, the project was successfully approved and included in the first batch of global initiatives under the “Decade of Science,” with the Association officially receiving confirmation from UNESCO.
As one of the core cooperation platforms for the project, the BRICS Platform for Enhancing Scientific Capacity and Innovation Cooperation provided full support and resource assurance throughout the proposal’s design, international coordination, and technical roadmap development. Drawing on a strong foundation built in recent years in emerging technology collaboration, talent exchange, and capacity building, the platform actively contributed to the establishment of a cooperative framework focused on key areas such as artificial intelligence, clean energy, life and health sciences, and agricultural technology. The initiative aims to develop a new BRICS science and technology cooperation mechanism based on capacity co-building, resource sharing, and standard alignment.
The project’s successful inclusion marks a significant step forward for BRICS and “BRICS+” partner countries in deepening scientific and technological cooperation within the United Nations framework and advancing global sustainable development goals. It also highlights the active engagement and institutional contributions of China’s civil society in global science and technology governance.
Looking ahead, the BRICS Platform for Enhancing Scientific Capacity and Innovation Cooperation will seize this opportunity to work with multilateral partners to advance the in-depth implementation of the initiative. The platform will promote the development of more high-quality, sustainable, and globally impactful scientific cooperation outcomes—contributing the “BRICS Solution” to the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
