On December 5, 2024, the thematic forum titled "Regional Practices and Visions for Science Popularization Capacity Building", as part of the 2024 World Conference on Science Literacy, was successfully held in Beijing. The forum was hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and organized by the Beijing International Exchange Association.

As a key participant, the BRICS Platform for Enhancing Scientific Capacity and Innovation Cooperation actively supported the forum’s preparation and the coordination of international guests, and took part in discussions and exchanges on relevant topics.

Focusing on science popularization capacity building at the regional level, the forum brought together 13 experts from eight countries—China, Malaysia, Portugal, Thailand, India, Argentina, South Africa, and Nigeria. In-depth exchanges were held on key issues such as the development of science communication infrastructure, talent cultivation, policy support, and international cooperation. Participants shared best practices and policy initiatives from their countries on enhancing science communication capabilities, improving grassroots science outreach, and promoting science education for youth.

During the forum, the BRICS Platform delivered a keynote presentation on “Promoting Mechanism Building for Science Popularization Cooperation among BRICS and Developing Economies”. The platform proposed leveraging its multilateral network to facilitate the sharing of high-quality science communication resources and educational tools, and to explore the establishment of a scientific literacy assessment system across BRICS countries, aiming to provide a cooperative model for enhancing global science popularization capacities.

This thematic forum served as a bridge for science communication exchange and cooperation across regions, laying a solid foundation for BRICS countries to jointly advance public science literacy and foster inclusive scientific and technological development.
